I turn 50 in January & I've decided I'm going to go back to Taos, New Mexico for a week-long artist retreat. The Groove - how to get (or stay) in it! How wonderful it is when you are in The Groove, and how to get in it when you're not. Is it even possible to stay in it? When you have to embrace the Unexpected... I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas/New Years! Mine was a total gong show. I'm not looking for sympathy because I believe it has made me a better person. Your Authentic Stroke A word about finding your Authentic Stroke. I have just finished reading the book "The Legend of Bagger Vance", and although it's a book about golfing, it also has a lot of wisdom for artists. Great time painting Live at Youth Unlimited Art of Art Charity Event on Nov. 3rd I was nervous about painting live at the Youth Unlimited 'Art of Art' charity event (in front of 500 people), on Nov. Practicing to Paint Live on Nov. 3rd I spent a few hours in the studio this morning practicing for the upcoming Live painting night on Nov. 3rd. I can't believe it's October already and my last blog post was on July 1st - Yikes! Let Mercy Fall 40x66 This month I am digging deeper than ever & taking Seth Godin's altMBA course. If I fail ... I fail. Being an artist has made me embrace failure in ways I had never imagined possible. I don't like it, but I have learned to appreciate the value that comes from experiencing failure. True Confessions (that might be a bit embarassing) When writing a blog post, one is supposed to be genuine, open & honest, so I'm going to jump in with both feet today. Creativity Coaching - Session 4: Changing Direction I pushed myself WAY beyond my comfort zone on this painting. And it paid off. It doesn't always work out, but I've been relentlessly committed to following my gut lately, and it often results in a new series or direction. Trusting the Process This is the title of one of my favourite books "Trust the Process", by Shaun McNiff. It's also what I'm in the midst of doing in my life right now. Am I weird? Do you ever ask yourself this? Or at least wonder silently? I have a feeling you might...... Which is why I am sharing my "weird-ness" with you 🙂 Sometimes it helps to know you aren't alone. Creativity Coaching - Session 3: Follow your Muse When I went into my studio today, I decided to work with cold wax & oil on the paintings I started in Session 1. Creativity Coaching - Session 2: Overcoming Fear There is one sure way to find your artistic voice, and that is to face fear head-on! Fear of failure never goes away entirely, but after a few successful fear-fights under your belt – especially the ones that leave you giddy with joy because you discovered something profoundly brilliant – you begin to develop your fear-fighting muscles. Creativity Coaching - Session 1: Showing Up I am excited to say that I’ve found something I’m passionate to blog about! Last week I had an epiphany…. I’m a Creativity Coach. My Marks ..... Workshop in January, etc... I am a different person since returning from my week-long artist retreat in New Mexico. I have had some amazing breakthroughs in my ability to let go in the studio (and even in other areas of my life). I love grilled onions! Happy September friends! I've been very negligent (again) about blogging. I have a million reasons that I won't bore you with. I promised my students that I would post photos of the painting "after" I had time to work on it. The Anorexic Perfectionist.... Every once in a while, I miss my 'old self'. The one who, in my 20's, was an anorexic perfectionist. Days like today - when I put on a t-shirt and see that my arms are much less toned than I would like. New York Show & Workshop ... UGallery Top Artist ... Recent Sales! I am a bit of a hermit over Chrismas / New Years. I tend to hibernate and close myself off from the outside world at this time of year. Have a wonderful Christmas! I wish you all a very Merry Christmas! This is my favourite holiday of the year, and I am looking forward to spending some time with family on the Island. This week's Auction - A beautiful painting from my "Reflections" Series This week's "Friday Facebook" auction is one of my favourite pieces from my Reflections series. Friday has always been my favourite day of the week, and I've just come up with a way to make it even more Awesome! Something new is stirring...... It's one of those seasons of life where I sense there is something happing that is just beyond my ability to comprehend or figure out. Creating + Connecting + Inspiring = AWESOME! Parksville Show - New Works - September, 2016 It's been a busy Summer with our move to Abbotsford taking front & centre stage. Finally, we are getting a bit settled in our new home, but it's been quite a huge endeavour. When you can't paint --- what do you do to keep the creativity flowing?? It's a strange feeling as an artist to take time off of creating your art. I have most of my art materials tucked away in the garage while we are selling our home, so it seems overwhelming to dig them out and start painting. Big Changes - little me Yes, it's been a while since I've written (again)! We're selling our home - our big, beautiful home in Langley. We're making a "lifestyle change", and it's not an easy process. The Best in Show..... I am so blessed to have such amazing collectors (and friends / family) to support me! It will be an amazing experience to exhibit my work on such a large stage. Rising Strong (borrowed from Brene Brown) It's a 'rising strong' kind of day. Those of you who have read Brene Brown's book know what I mean. I was so optimistic that my painting would be selected in the top 10 of over 500 entries submitted for the "New York Artexpo 2016 Official Poster". Trusting the Process 2016 is a big year for me! Last week's Artist residency & mentorship in Naramata I had the privilege of spending 5 days with 11 other artists and our instructor, Suzanne Northcott, at the Sandy Beach resort in Naramata last week. Authentic Living takes guts...... We are all on a journey, and lately mine has not exactly been a comfortable one. I am taking a course that I can't say I really wanted to take, but I knew it would make me a better wife, mother, teacher, coach, daugher, friend, artist - person. Art without Colour? My studio exercise regime continues......last week I forced myself to do a painting using primarily black & white. This was a brand new experience for me! Rest (on Labour Day)..... Progress on Painting Exercises & Painting on Paper Here are the 1st and 2nd drafts of the piece I talked about in my last blog posting (remember - this is an Exercise I am doing to get back in 'studio shape' after Summer Vacation) The first draft on the 'Waterfall' did not inspire me much. Expanding horizons..... Summer is almost over, and it's been an amazing one - lots of family time & not much studio time. I'm taking some deliberate steps to stretch my studio muscles in preparation for when everyone goes back to school & I can get serious in my studio again. Summer Reflections..... It's been an adventurous Summer with a camping trip to Jasper, Alberta (tenting in the rain is not something I recommend), a 4-night get-away for Russ & I to Sechelt where we stayed at a fabulous Vacation Rental by Owner property (Sea Stone), and plenty of family gatherings, birthday celebrations, etc. Thanks to my Collectors...... The house has gone from being very full last week, with family visiting for Christmas - to very empty! The boys are all snowboarding, and I'm holding the fort (ie, taking care of the dogs, the new bearded dragon & getting some work done).
